| Control Options Weeds are a common problem and getting rid of them can be a challenge, especially if they are in close proximity to fruits and vegetables that you have put alot of time and effort into cultivating. There are two types of solutions for weeds which have been approved for organic gardening. Herbicidal Soap A contact killer, herbicidal soap like Safer® Brand Fast Acting Weed and Grass Killer will kill any weeds or grass that you spray it on and only those plants. The great thing about herbicidal soap is it won’t run through the soil and it won’t kill nearby plants. It works great to kill weeds or unwanted grass within hours on sidewalks, driveways, between cobblestone walkways or outdoor pavers. Also, spray it in your flower bed on those pesky plants you don’t want around. Just make sure you don’t accidentally spray it on your flowers, vegetable plants or other ornamentals because herbicidal soap doesn’t differentiate between plants you like and weeds you don’t like. Use herbicidal soap as needed throughout the gardening season to keep weeds that happen to sprout up, under control. Corn Gluten A product using Corn Gluten such as Concern® Weed Prevention Plus® for Gardens acts as a natural, pre-emergent, herbicide, which means it kills the roots of sprouting seeds before they can take hold so the weed will never grow. It works best if you mix it with mulch or into the soil for flower beds or apply it to the lawn then water it. If it rains heavily in the 2-3 days after the initial application, you’ll want to reapply, so watch the weather forecast. Reapply every 3-5 weeks for best results. If you apply corn gluten in the early spring to your flower bed, vegetable garden or lawn, you’ll be greatly reducing the number of weeds you have to spray with herbicidal soap or pull throughout the growing season. If you are planning a garden that you’ve planted from seeds, don’t use corn gluten until the flowers or vegetables you’ve planted are firmly established plants; otherwise corn gluten is a safe, natural way to control weeds through out the season on all plant types. You can even use it on fruits and vegetable crops, up to the day of harvest. If you love feeding the birds, but hate the mess and all the weed and grass that grows from the seeds all over the ground, sprinkle an ample amount of corn gluten into the ground below the feeder to stop those seeds from germinating.
