organic Indoor GardeningIndoor Gardening

A popular form of gardening that tends to pick up as the weather turns cooler is indoor gardening (also known as terrestrial gardening). This form of organic gardening is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil.

Safer® Brand products are a favorite for those in the indoor gardening sector due to the fact Safer® Brand products are organic, and most are OMRI Listed®. Read more about indoor gardening and the products to keep your organic indoor garden pest free. Popular products for indoor gardening are our Insect Killing Soap, Caterpillar Killer, and EndALL

Indoor Gardening Techniques

There are two main techniques in indoor gardening – they are solution culture and medium culture.

Solution culture does not use a solid medium for roots, just the nutrient solution. There are 3 types of solution cultures:

  • Static Solution Culture - In static solution culture, plants are grown in containers of nutrient solution (sometimes in Mason jars).
  • Continuous Flower Solution
  • Aeroponics

Soil acts as a mineral reservoir to store all of the essential nutrients for the plant, but it is not mandatory in order to achieve plant growth. The mineral nutrients in the soil dissolve when exposed to water, and this provides the delivery method for plant roots to absorb them. Upon the absorption of the minerals, the soil subsequently becomes no longer required.

Indoor Gardening is a standard technique used in biology research. Examples of techniques used in indoor gardening were used in Walt Disney World EPCOT Center's Land Pavilion. NASA has done extensive research using indoor gardening methods.

Container Gardening can commonly be confused with Indoor Gardening due to the sense container gardens can be grown indoors. Container Gardening still employs the use of soil as the delivery method for nutrient absorbtion and therefore does not classify in the same sense as Indoor Gardening (Terrestrial Gardening).

Advantages

  • No soil is necessary
  • The water stays in the system and can be reused (water conservation)
  • Typically produces consistent and high yields
  • Pests and diseases are easier to control
  • Plant's nutrients can be easily controlled and applied

When using Safer® Brand organic pest control products such as our Insect Killing Soap, which eliminates soft-bodied insects on your indoor garden, you can rest assured knowing your are not introducing synthetic chemicals into your plants.

Indoor gardening is one of the fastest growing sectors of gardening and can be employed in just about any area such as urban environments and areas with adverse weather.

Disadvantages

  • Requires additional cost incurred with purchasing indoor gardening containment systems
  • Since soil is not available as a buffer, it requires additional maintenance
  • Pathogen attacks caused by high moisture are common and can lead to rapid death of plants

Indoor Gardening Techniques

Static Solution

- In a static solution culture, plants are grown in containers of nutrient solution (such as glass jars, buckets or tanks). The solution is aerated but also could be un-aerated.

- A homemade system can be contructed from anything such as plastic food containers or glass jars and anything using aquarium hardware, including an aquarium pump.

- What makes it static solution is the use of one solution, and when that solution is depleted, fresh solution is added. The plant is just resting in the solution, which remains static until depletion/changing.

Continuous Flow Solution

- In this method, the nutrient solution is constantly flowing past the roots. It is much easier then static solution to automate and usually produces higher yields, over a longer period of time.

- The flow rate of the solution is essential and the most important aspect of this method. Too much or too little flow can cause nutritional problems with the plants.

Aeroponics

- This method involves on and off saturation of the plants using fine drops of nutrient solution. It entails growing plants with their roots suspended in a growth chamber and has the roots periodically wetted with atomized nutrients.

- The main advantage to this method is excellent aeration. Another advantage is that any plant can be grown in an aeroponic system because of how well the environment can be controlled.

- NASA research concludes plants grown using this method have an 80% increase in minerals as compared to other methods.
