What
Organic Pest Control consists of biological (or natural predatory) controls, cultural (or environmental controls), and chemical controls that are natural or organic. Natural predatory or biological controls involve attracting natural predators of the pest in your garden. These predators are beneficial insects that include lady beetles, lacewings, parasitic wasps, and others. You can attract these insects by planting certain flora such as nectar or pollen producing flowers.
Cultural or environmental controls consist of crop rotation, trap crops, physical removal of the pest, removal of plant debris, selecting plants resistant to diseases, and proper fertilization. Trap crops planted somewhat near the target crop or around the garden perimeter can attract the insect pests, keeping them away from the target crop. The target crops can then be sprayed or the pests hand-r emoved. If the infestation is not large, hand picking the insects off the plants and destroying the insects may be effective in controlling the insect pest. Any plant debris on the ground should be removed before tilling the soil in early spring or after harvesting in late summer or early fall, eliminating any insects or eggs overwintering under the debris. By selecting plants resistant to diseases or insects and by using good fertilization practices, you can have a good head start in controlling pests in your garden.
If natural predatory and environmental methods do not work, you may want to try natural organic controls. These effective, organic products use ingredients that are safe for the environment, people and wildlife . Insecticidal soaps and products containing pyrethrins are two safe products that can be used in controlling insect pests. B.t . is often used to control caterpillars. Always read and follow all directions carefully when using any control product.
In the case of all control methods, complete eradication of the insect pest is not the goal. Complete eradication could kill beneficial insects, thereby removing a natural control against future infestations that may occur once the chemical control has worn off. Having just a few of the insect pest species in your garden helps to retain beneficial insects so they do not fly off in search of pests in other gardens or yards. Remember the goal is to control the insect pest, and this can be accomplished using an IPM. Safer®Brand brings you a variety of effective insect control products that are gentler on the environment!
