PlantingPlanting

Planning for planting next year's garden actually begins after harvesting the current year's crops.  Removing old plant debris and tilling the soil are two steps towards next year's garden.

The best time for purchasing seeds is early in the spring.  Plants that have already been started indoors should be acclimated to the sunshine and weather before they are placed in the garden soil.

When to Plant

Planning for planting next year's garden actually begins after harvesting the current year's crops.  In the fall remove any old plant remains, twigs, and anything else under which pests or their eggs can overwinter.  Once this has been done, you are ready to till the soil.

When you are ready to plant in the spring, do not till if the soil is too wet.  It will make it difficult for seeds and plants to grow if the soil is too compacted.

The best time for purchasing seeds is early in the spring.  You will have a larger selection and can choose the seeds that will best fit your preferences.  Check them not only for varieties in the type of vegetable you want, but also look at the length of time for maturity and for pest and disease resistance.

Planting
Different vegetables require different temperatures and conditions for planting. Check the package for the plant's temperature ranges or ask the professional at your local garden center or greenhouse.

Keep in mind that a standard planting time could be altered by a particularly early or late spring.  Your local garden center should be able to advise you accordingly.

Another consideration is plants that can be planted during the late spring or early summer and harvested in the fall.

Plants that have already been started indoors should be acclimated to the sunshine and weather before they are placed in the garden soil.  Take the plants outside each day for about a week or so and place them in the sunlight for graduated periods of time throughout the week. Be sure to water the plantings the day before you will be placing them in the garden.  Transplants should be planted in the late afternoon or on a cloudy day.
