Soap is different than detergent! Detergent is derived from petroleum by-products. Soap is a product of combining an organic oil source (plants, for example) with a potassium salt. The resulting chemical reaction makes a soap like the ancient Greeks or the earlier pioneers used.

Bugs and Plants have a waxy, fat layer that coats them to protect them in much the same way our skin protects us. It helps retain moisture and protect the insect or plant from attack. This is key to understanding how soaps work as an insecticide or herbicide.
