How to Keep Cats Out of Your Garden

Many times gardeners blame any of their garden damage on wild animals, but they forget that the perpetrator can easily be their sweet, cuddly felines. To cats, your garden looks like a giant litter box, and it gets even better when they see many things they can chew on, like your plants. Gardens are a cat’s personal playground. Whether it’s your own pet cat, the neighbor’s, or a stray, something must be done right “meow” to stop the madness!

10 Safe Ways to Repel Cats

Here are 10 different ways to safely keep cats from entering your garden!

  1. Plant Rosemary, Lavender, or Citronella in your garden. Cats hate any concentrated scents from essential oils.
  2. Toss pinecones, nut shells, and sticks around the perimeter of your garden. Cats do not like walking on anything that is sharp, sticky, or noisy. These items all make a great fertilizer as well. It’s a win-win!
  3. Dispose of anything citrus in your garden. They hate the strong smell of oranges, lemons, etc. Note: You can eat the fruit first. The peels will work too! They also work great as a fertilizer.
  4. Make your own natural cat repellent. Mix together dried mustard, coffee grounds, and rosemary. This mixture is safe and good for your soil but creates a smell cats will run away from.
  5. Dump your tea leaves in the garden. Cats despise the smell and taste. Note: If you invite cats to a tea party, they will most likely not come.
  6. Combine hot pepper liquid, lemon juice, and tea of rue, for another homemade cat repellent. This can be sprayed directly on the plants.
  7. Sprinkle crushed pepper in the borders of your garden. The smell will repel the cats. Cayenne pepper works great but may need to be reapplied after heavy rain. Bonus: With this method, pepper plants may sprout up!
  8. Add plants to your garden with pungent smells that cats don’t like. Coleus Canina plants also known as “Scaredy Cat Coleus,” give off an awful odor, similar to skunk spray. The smell gets worse when the plant is brushed up against or bruised. Rue is also a plant that gives off a stench. Rue has pretty blue flowers, so it’s also a nice plant to decorate your garden with!
  9. If you want a fast solution without the DIY concept for you cat problem, try Safer® Brand Critter Ridder® Animal Repellents. This product includes a combination of natural, intense ingredients; Piperine, oil of black pepper, and capsaicin. The formula attacks the senses of smell and taste, teaching cats to stay away.
  10. Deterring cats by attacking their senses is one of the best ways to go, but for double, the security also adds a barrier in addition to a natural remedy. The Zareba® Battery-Powered Garden Protection Kit is a light duty electric fence perfect for keeping pets away from your garden. The fence gives off a light zap when contacted, teaching cats and other pets to think twice about coming back again!

All of these methods are safe and easy solutions to keep the cats from destroying your garden. Combining more than one method may give you a better chance of succeeding. Now that the cats are gone, take some time to make your garden “purrfect” again!
