Hydroponic growers can choose from a variety of systems for keeping plants supplied with the resources they need. Nutrient Film Technique, or NFT, is a set-up in which the plants' roots dangle in shallow trays and a very thin, low-flow of fertilizer solution (or "film") is constantly circulated, typically powered by a small pump, through the trays and over the roots.
The thin film ensures that the upper part of the roots remain dry and have access to oxygen in the air, preventing root rot and stimulating vigorous growth. NFT is a fairly sophisticated system with what can be significant upfront costs, but it reliably produces big yields.
