Controlling Mosquitoes

Manage Moisture
Remove containers and debris that can collect rainwater, and fill holes in trees, driveways, and patios.  Avoid over-irrigating lawns and gardens, and keep weeds and grass well clipped.  Don't let water pool in flower pot saucers for more than a day or so.  Check your gutters and drains to clear debris and to be sure that there is no standing water after a rain or watering.  Repair leaky faucets and air conditioning units.

Skin Mosquito Repellents
Skin repellents are sprayed directly on the skin.  Apply lotion or spray to all exposed body parts such as hands, arms, legs, face, feet.  Read individual directions for specific applications.

Area Mosquito Repellents
Area repellents such as candles, coils or torches can be used to repel mosquitoes from porches, patios or any other unscreened outdoor area. These devices are most effective when there is no wind in the area.

Mosquito Dunks
Mosquito dunks can be placed in still water such as bird baths, ponds, lakes and any other breeding place to kill larvae.

Lawn and Garden Mosquito Repellents
Lawn and garden repellents can be sprayed directly in an area to create a barrier and deter mosquitoes from landing in resting areas such as shrubs and bushes.

Fish
Place mosquito-eating fish in your pond or lake. Place goldfish in back-yard ponds.

Window and Door Screens
To prevent mosquitoes from coming indoors, make sure doors and windows have fine-mesh, well-maintained screens.

Avoidance
Covering your body can be an excellent defense against mosquitoes.  Protective clothing, including long sleeves and pants, socks, and hats or scarves can stave off most mosquito bites.  Specially designed fine mesh head nets and body covers are available.  You may also choose to avoid going outdoors during times of day when mosquitoes are most active.
