Common Mosquito Species
Mosquitoes are attracted to water
There are 300 species in the United States. Mosquitoes are black or dark brown. Have long slender bodies, even longer legs, and two narrow wings. They range in size from about 1/8" to 1/4" long.

Mosquitoes can travel remarkable distances, up to 40 miles in 24 hours. Both male and female feed on plant nectar, but it is only the females that feed on blood

There are three types of mosquitoes. The early season type appear in May to June. The Flood Water type appear in mid-June to October. These are the most common. Finally, permanent water mosquitoes appear in June to September.
