How It Works

The best way to get rid of weeds in your lawn is to attack them before they begin to emerge! Concern® Weed Prevention Plus® is powered by 100% corn gluten to suffocate and suppress weeds before they begin to grow.

Corn gluten is a by-product of the cornstarch manufacturing process and it has the ability to prevent seeds - especially those seeds of pesky weeds found in your lawn and garden - from developing. Corn gluten meal is also naturally high in nitrogen to give your lawn an extra boost of the essential nutrient needed for fast green up.

Get Ahead of Weeds Before They Start

When using a weed pre-emergent, timing and temperature are key. Be sure to apply Weed Prevention Plus® in early spring so you attack those weeds before they sprout! As a general rule, Weed Prevention Plus® should be applied when crocuses begin to bloom or when forsythia blooms start to drop. This timing will vary depending on different geographical locations and climates.

It’s extremely important that you apply Weed Prevention Plus early in the spring while weeds are still germinating below ground. Once applied, corn gluten meal works to prevent the weed seedlings from successfully germinating. And the best part is that children and pets can play on the lawn immediately after application since Weed Prevention Plus® is composed entirely of natural ingredients!

Natural Nitrogen – Perfect for Lawns

An added benefit of using 100% corn gluten on your lawn is that it will feed your established grass while simultaneously preventing weeds from sprouting. Corn gluten meal is naturally high in nitrogen, an essential nutrient that promotes lush, green leaf growth in grass.

Take special note of the weather conditions for the next few days following your application of Weed Prevention Plus® on your lawn. For best results, make sure there’s going to be a few rain-free days in a row after you apply. After Weed Prevention Plus® is spread throughout your lawn, thoroughly water your entire lawn to ensure the corn gluten meal begins to absorb into the ground. Then, allow it to dry out over the next few days, and as weeds try to sprout, their roots will die and they won’t be able to grow.

If you’re looking to grow new grass on your lawn, you will need to wait at least 6 weeks after your application of Weed Prevention Plus® to sow new seeds. Because corn gluten meal is so effective at suppressing seed germination, it can potentially suppress the growth of new grass seed as well.

Great for Gardens

Weed Prevention Plus® is great for preventing weeds in and around flower, fruit and vegetable gardens as well! Corn gluten meal doesn’t change soil pH, and it won’t harm any of your established plants, so feel free to spread it around your blooming tulips and growing tomato plants. If you’re transplanting already sprouting fruits and vegetables into your garden, they’ll be safe around Weed Prevention Plus too. If you’re looking to start your garden from seeds, then you’ll need to wait 6 weeks to plant your new seeds after applying corn gluten meal to your garden soil.

Effective Against a Variety of Weeds

Weed Prevention Plus® is effective against a variety of common garden and lawn weeds including:

  • Annual Bluegrass
  • Barnyardgrass
  • Black Medic
  • Black Nightshade
  • Buckhorn Plantain
  • Catchweed Bedstraw
  • Clover
  • Crabgrass
  • Creeping Bentgrass
  • Curly Dock
  • Dandelions
  • Green & Giant Foxtails
  • Lambsquarter
  • Orchardgrass
  • Purslane
  • Quackgrass
  • Redroot Pigweed
  • Shattercane
  • Velvetleaf
  • Wooly Cupgrass
  • And much more...

Existing Weeds

Corn gluten cannot be used to kill existing weeds. Because weeds have already sprouted, corn gluten’s powers are ineffective at suppressing the weed growth. In fact, by applying corn gluten meal to existing weeds, you’ll actually be feeding it and promoting its growth because of the high nitrogen content found in corn gluten!

In order to kill existing weeds, more extensive measures will need to be taken. Use a contact weed killer like Safer® Brand Fast Acting Weed and Grass Killer to kill weeds on contact. This weed killer is compliant for use in organic gardening and won’t move through your soil to damage nearby plants and grass. And, if you can, place mulch on top of the established weeds you killed to further prevent regrowth and new blooms.

Great lawn, less environmental impact By Herman2992
My Midwest lawn is always the first to green up in the Spring, and ALWAYS has less dandelions than any of my neighbors. Thanks, Safer!

Does what it claims... By K Mc
I'm a lawn guy in the mid atlantic and love the organics but I was sceptical of an organic pre-emergent. I was proven wrong. Worked to the maximum of the product description, 90% effective in the first year alone. I have crab grass every year. Typically I will put down my synthetic product in late March when the night temps stay in the 40's. With good timing I will have little crab in June and July, and anything that makes it through the barrier I will hit with a high % quinclorac and the crab grass is handled. I won't say that this product is better than its synthetic competitors but it can go head to head and has the safer benefit to it. Now price on the other hand is a completely different matter. Although this product works extremely well I will not purchase it again due to that price point of $22.50 per 1000 sq. Ft. However for clients with a high price point in mind there would be no substitute.

Quick read review :
1. Extremely effective.
2. Does what it states it does.
3. Safe for the whole family, that's why we're on this website.
4. Extremely costly at $22.50 per 1000 sq. Ft.

Q.Can I apply Concern Weed Prevention Plus along with Lawn Restore II Fertilizer or does there need to be a wait time between the applications?

We recommend a program where you apply Ringer Lawn Restore in April, Concern Weed Prevention Plus in May, then Ringer again in July and September. If new seed is being planted, this should be done two weeks after application of Concern, which would prevent germination.

Q.My broadleaf weeds are manageable- no real concerns. I used to have a beautiful St. Augustine grass lawn, until last year, when a portion was invaded with centipede (I think) and Bermuda grass. how do I get rid of these undesired grasses?

This product is used to prevent weeds before they take over your lawn. We recommend applying this product in early spring so the weeds are handled before they sprout. this product ok to use in a vegetable garden?

Yes, this product can be used in fruit and vegetable gardens.
