Common Flea Species
To control fleas, it helps to know how they come into our world. Their eggs are laid on the host and fall off. Larvae hatch and feed on organic debris in carpet. Then they spin a cocoon. Pupae hatch and immediately seek a host. Adults immediately seed a warm-blooded host such as dogs or cats.

Characteristics
One female can produce over 250,000 baby fleas in one month. Size - 1/16" to 1/8" long. Jump about 8" high and 12" sideways and pull up to 400-times their weight. "Pancake" shape allows fleas to run quickly from point-to-point on the host's body, avoiding danger. Fleas bite repeatedly, even when they have satisfied their own hunger.

This annoying trait enables fleas to produce ample fecal matter consisting of dried blood to feed the next generation of hatched larvae.  The small black fecal droppings are often seen together with the flea's white, oval shaped eggs, which together look a lot like salt and pepper.
