All About Moles
Man's battle with the mole stems from our love of our lawns. While creating tunnels, a mole pushes up mounds of earth and usually undermines the root system of growing plants. Often the damage that is blamed on moles is the result of rodents living in mole tunnels. The mole is a small, usually gray or brown mammal, and a member of their own family the Talapidae.

Once you see a mole, it is unlikely that you will forget him. They have eyes that are often hidden by their fur, no external ears, a naked snout, and paddle-shaped large forelegs.

Moles feast on a diet that consists of insects. Their diet is primarily made up of worms, grubs (which are the larval forms of many insects) and other insects that can be found beneath the surface of the ground.

Moles spends most of their lives underground, coming to the surface only to gather nesting materials. They prefer residing in moist loose soil.

Breeding occurs late winter and early spring. Moles usually produce a litter of three to seven young. At about four weeks of age the mole becomes active.

Moles are capable of moving backwards or forwards through their tunnels.

Natural enemies of moles include badgers, wolverines, coyotes, and of course humans.

Many people find moles beneficial as they turn the soil and increase biological activity, therefore increasing the quality of the land.
