Concern® Weed Prevention Plus® For Lawn Care 0% Phosphate 3-Pack

How It Works

The best way to get rid of weeds in your lawn is to attack them before they begin to emerge! Concern® Weed Prevention Plus® is powered by 100% corn gluten to suffocate and suppress weeds before they begin to grow.

Corn gluten is a by-product of the cornstarch manufacturing process and it has the ability to prevent seeds - especially those seeds of pesky weeds found in your lawn and garden - from developing. Corn gluten meal is also naturally high in nitrogen to give your lawn an extra boost of the essential nutrient needed for fast green up.

Get Ahead of Weeds Before They Start

When using a weed pre-emergent, timing and temperature are key. Be sure to apply Weed Prevention Plus® in early spring so you attack those weeds before they sprout! As a general rule, Weed Prevention Plus® should be applied when crocuses begin to bloom or when forsythia blooms start to drop. This timing will vary depending on different geographical locations and climates.

It’s extremely important that you apply Weed Prevention Plus early in the spring while weeds are still germinating below ground. Once applied, corn gluten meal works to prevent the weed seedlings from successfully germinating. And the best part is that children and pets can play on the lawn immediately after application since Weed Prevention Plus® is composed entirely of natural ingredients!

Natural Nitrogen – Perfect for Lawns

An added benefit of using 100% corn gluten on your lawn is that it will feed your established grass while simultaneously preventing weeds from sprouting. Corn gluten meal is naturally high in nitrogen, an essential nutrient that promotes lush, green leaf growth in grass.

Take special note of the weather conditions for the next few days following your application of Weed Prevention Plus® on your lawn. For best results, make sure there’s going to be a few rain-free days in a row after you apply. After Weed Prevention Plus® is spread throughout your lawn, thoroughly water your entire lawn to ensure the corn gluten meal begins to absorb into the ground. Then, allow it to dry out over the next few days, and as weeds try to sprout, their roots will die and they won’t be able to grow.

If you’re looking to grow new grass on your lawn, you will need to wait at least 6 weeks after your application of Weed Prevention Plus® to sow new seeds. Because corn gluten meal is so effective at suppressing seed germination, it can potentially suppress the growth of new grass seed as well.

Great for Gardens

Weed Prevention Plus® is great for preventing weeds in and around flower, fruit and vegetable gardens as well! Corn gluten meal doesn’t change soil pH, and it won’t harm any of your established plants, so feel free to spread it around your blooming tulips and growing tomato plants. If you’re transplanting already sprouting fruits and vegetables into your garden, they’ll be safe around Weed Prevention Plus too. If you’re looking to start your garden from seeds, then you’ll need to wait 6 weeks to plant your new seeds after applying corn gluten meal to your garden soil.

Effective Against a Variety of Weeds

Weed Prevention Plus® is effective against a variety of common garden and lawn weeds including:

  • Annual Bluegrass
  • Barnyardgrass
  • Black Medic
  • Black Nightshade
  • Buckhorn Plantain
  • Catchweed Bedstraw
  • Clover
  • Crabgrass
  • Creeping Bentgrass
  • Curly Dock
  • Dandelions
  • Green & Giant Foxtails
  • Lambsquarter
  • Orchardgrass
  • Purslane
  • Quackgrass
  • Redroot Pigweed
  • Shattercane
  • Velvetleaf
  • Wooly Cupgrass
  • And much more...

Existing Weeds

Corn gluten cannot be used to kill existing weeds. Because weeds have already sprouted, corn gluten’s powers are ineffective at suppressing the weed growth. In fact, by applying corn gluten meal to existing weeds, you’ll actually be feeding it and promoting its growth because of the high nitrogen content found in corn gluten!

In order to kill existing weeds, more extensive measures will need to be taken. Use a contact weed killer like Safer® Brand Fast Acting Weed and Grass Killer to kill weeds on contact. This weed killer is compliant for use in organic gardening and won’t move through your soil to damage nearby plants and grass. And, if you can, place mulch on top of the established weeds you killed to further prevent regrowth and new blooms.

Good price for 40 pounds By JMAMercer

I bought this Corn Gluten meal based on research findings. It will be my second year using this. The 40 lb bags come in a white bag without any pre-printed label. There is a stick-on showing it is from Concern and also an instruction. I trust this is the same as the 25 lb bag I bought from Home Depot.

So Far No Crabgrass By Wisconsin Mom of Six

I agree with other reviewers that the biggest negative of this product is trying to figure out when to put it down. This was my first try, and I think (hope!) that I got it down in time to prevent crabgrass - my biggest lawn enemy. However, I can see the clover and other weeds making a strong start, so I think I should have put it down earlier. I wish Safer could make a map (similar to those they make for growing regions) to estimate the best time for us to use this product, because it is a very expensive "trial run." I will try at least once more though because I don't want my kids playing in a yard full of cancer-causing chemicals!

Clover, Crabgrass and Dandelions: You're Under Arrest! By Allergic2Chemicals

I have bought this and the other Corn Gluten product offered here for 3 years. I always seem to get the interval wrong when you have to spread it. NEVER spread during May or June - Clover, Dandelions and Crabgrass will be EVERYWHERE! I spread some in October 2016 and again in March 2017. The grass was REALLY green but I missed the period to completely stamp out the Dandelions and Clover which appeared in Spring/Summer/Fall 2017; I spread some again in October 2017 but this time really laid it on. I will spread some again in late February/Early March 2018. I will get it right eventually. NOTHING wrong with the product; I just need to spread it at the right time to arrest the offending weeds.

Great lawn, less environmental impact By Herman2992
My Midwest lawn is always the first to green up in the Spring, and ALWAYS has less dandelions than any of my neighbors. Thanks, Safer!

Spread It At The Right TIme By Allergic2Chemicals

2nd time buying this product. Bought 3 - 40lb bags this time. You have to spread it at the right interval or you will have clover, dandelions and crabgrass everywhere. Wait until it is about to rain and then spread it so the product soaks in. I think if I do this 2 more times before the weather starts getting cold I might FINALLY arrest the dandelions and clover. So far no crabgrass this year for the 1st time in 14 years!

Does what it claims... By K Mc
I'm a lawn guy in the mid atlantic and love the organics but I was sceptical of an organic pre-emergent. I was proven wrong. Worked to the maximum of the product description, 90% effective in the first year alone. I have crab grass every year. Typically I will put down my synthetic product in late March when the night temps stay in the 40's. With good timing I will have little crab in June and July, and anything that makes it through the barrier I will hit with a high % quinclorac and the crab grass is handled. I won't say that this product is better than its synthetic competitors but it can go head to head and has the safer benefit to it. Now price on the other hand is a completely different matter. Although this product works extremely well I will not purchase it again due to that price point of $22.50 per 1000 sq. Ft. However for clients with a high price point in mind there would be no substitute.

Quick read review :
1. Extremely effective.
2. Does what it states it does.
3. Safe for the whole family, that's why we're on this website.
4. Extremely costly at $22.50 per 1000 sq. Ft.

Q.What can we use on our grass to "spot treat" weeds that have already started coming up this spring? We already put grass seed down two weeks ago, but really want to start using your products and I am concerned we never put down a weed killer. I'm assuming it is too late to apply the weed prevention plus now? But what can we spot treat with? Or, should we apply the weed prevention and just forgo trying to grow new grass?

This product will not affect weeds that have already sprouted. For existing weeds we recommend our Fast Acting Weed & Grass Killer (model 5055-6).

Q.Once I apply the application, how much do I have to wait if I wanted to put down a regular lawn fertilizer? For reference, I applied the Cocern on March 30th. Also, can you tell me the 3 digits of this product? "NPK" = Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. Thanks!

We recommend contacting the fertilizer manufacturer for application directions. This product is 100% corn gluten meal and does not have a NPK rating.

Q.So can you tell me what spreader settings I should use to apply this? I have Scotts Mini Spreader with edge guard. Thanks!

Begin with the medium setting and see how much coverage that offers. Should then be made accordingly.
