Finding nutrients that are compliant for use in organic production is no easy task. But at Safer® Brand, organic gardening is our passion. During development of our hydro nutrients, our goal was to provide the best products at a price point that didn't break the bank. Our core line of nutrients, Awaken, Accelerate, and Amplify, are OMRI Listed® and for organic production. These products feature fish and molasses as the main ingredients. Triple-filtered and easy to dilute, our products work in any type of grows. Grow with confidence with Safer® Brand Hydro Nutrients!
Hydroponic gardening is an at-home gardening technique that matches large hydroponic systems in style, but at a smaller scale that’s manageable by a single gardener. Hydroponic gardening provides plants with nutrients they need to keep growing healthy and strong, but not in a traditional soil-based setting.
Contrary to popular belief, hydroponic systems are more than a planting operation where vegetables grow with their roots suspended in nutrient-filled water. In fact, there are many styles of hydroponic systems that use a variety of growing mediums. Many are available for garden-size organic hydroponics, including coconut fiber, gravel, perlite, rockwool, sand and vermiculite. These growing mediums allow hydroponic plants to quickly draw in nutrients, and do so without expending the energy they would in a traditional setting. In a soil-based garden, roots must grow through soil to find these nutrients. In a hydroponic garden, the nutrients are immediately available and this triggers growth elsewhere in the plant.
Nutrients and Fertilizer for Hydroponic Gardening
Selecting the proper fertilizers for your hydroponic system is essential. Because nutrients are extracted so quickly by hydroponic plants, be careful to apply the proper amounts of fertilizer to keep your plants growing full and strong.
As with fertilizers for soil-based plants, hydroponic fertilizers are measured on the N-P-K scale. A fertilizer that has an N-P-K measurement of 2-0-8, for example, has 2% nitrogen, 0% phosphorus and 8% potassium. The difference in hydroponic fertilizers, however, is related to how they are refined, their lack of impurities and their solubility within a water solution.
Fertilizers made exclusively for soil-based gardens shouldn’t be used in hydroponic systems. These products can cause trouble for your system and may not dilute properly within your reservoirs. However, fertilizers designed for hydroponics work great for soil-based gardens.
pH Levels in Hydroponics
Most plants require a pH level between 5.5 and 6.5 to efficiently draw nutrients from their growing medium. For hydroponic gardens, this is especially important because soilless growing mediums rely on a hydroponic solution to deliver nutrient-rich water to the plants. An unbalanced pH can cause these nutrients to attach to the sides of reservoirs and growing chambers rather than remaining diluted and available for plants to absorb.
With that in mind, it’s important to regularly monitor your pH and adjust as needed. If you don’t, your hydroponic plants may starve for lack of nutrients.
Pest and Disease Controls in Hydroponics
Despite all the careful effort to regulate the growth in hydroponic gardens, there are still pests and disease to battle. Harmful insects will often sneak in through doors, windows and vents. Some will even hitch a ride on an incoming plant. Diseases, mold and fungus develop when conditions accidentally deteriorate or when cross-contamination occurs. Take control of these situations by remaining vigilant as you work in your hydroponic garden, keeping a careful watch on your plants’ conditions and applying the necessary solutions whenever needed.
