How It Works

Safer® Brand Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) provides effective pest control against a variety of crawling insects. This ready-to-use powder-like insecticide is super easy to use and can be applied to places where insects spend most of their time. Once insects come in contact or ingest this dual-action powder, it immediately goes to work to completely kill them within 48 hours.

Our D.E. is non-staining and has no odor, so you can confidently apply within your home. D.E. also works outdoors to eliminate pesky crawling insects as they try to sneak inside your home. Just keep in mind that it will need to be reapplied after watering or rain,

Kills crawling insects within 48 hours.

Once you apply Safer® Brand Diatomaceous Earth in areas where you have a crawling insect problem, you’ll notice that D.E. goes to work right away! This unique dual-action crawling insect killer uses two modes to eliminate bugs – by ingestion and touch. Now you have a two-prong approach to getting rid of nuisance crawling insects inside and outside your home.

After applying D.E., you’ll find that bugs die completely within 48 hours. If you have a large infestation issue, it may take a few days for all insects to come in contact with the powder and the infestation to be gone.

A Mechanical Killer to the Rescue

Diatomaceous earth is unlike most other insect killers on the market today. Insects cannot build up an immunity to D.E. since it works as a mechanical killer to begin killing insects on contact. There are no chemicals in D.E. like there are in other chemical elimination products that insects can build up an immunity to.

This dust-like powder is made from crushed fossilized algae, aka diatoms that come from freshwater sources. It feels like a fine powder when we rub it in our hands, but these tiny diatoms are very sharp to insects with delicate exoskeletons. When applied, insects cross through the powder or ingest it, effectively cutting their exoskeleton and causing them to dehydrate and die within 48 hours.

Sprinkle Directly Where Insects Live

Safer® Brand Diatomaceous Earth effectively kills a variety of crawling insects including bedbugs, cockroaches, earwigs, grasshoppers, ants, crickets, millipedes, centipedes, silverfish, carpet beetles, fleas, and more. For quick results, apply directly to cracks and crevices inside and outside your home, hitting these insects directly where they live and breed.

Coat a thin layer of dust underneath and behind appliances, furniture, doorways, windowsills and other hiding places throughout your kitchen and living areas. And if you see any insects while you’re applying, make sure you sprinkle D.E. directly on them for further benefit. Don’t forget to apply in nooks and crannies of attics, basements and garages as these places are known hotspots that many crawling insects love to hide in.

A Solution for Bedbugs, Fleas, and Outdoor Insects

In order to use diatomaceous earth to get rid of a bedbug infestation, it’s important that all areas of the bedroom are thoroughly dusted. It’s best to dismantle your bed and bedframe in order to reach every crevice where bedbugs hide. Dust all areas of the bed with D.E., including the edges, folds and surface area of the mattress. It’s even a good idea to dust D.E. your windowsills and openings in your bedroom too. Once the bedbugs come into contact with D.E., they will die within 48 hours.

If you’ve found that fleas have entered your home, whether they came inside with your pets or by another means, D.E. can help! Thoroughly apply diatomaceous earth to cracks and crevices, baseboards, and carpets wherever fleas are suspected. You can also use D.E. on the floor and bedding where your pet sleeps. Be sure to keep your pets out of the affected areas and off the bedding until the flea infestation is gone and D.E. is cleaned up and removed.

D.E. can also be used to get rid of crawling insects found on the exterior of your home. Just remember that D.E. only works to kill nuisance insects when dry, so you’ll need to reapply after rain or watering.

Silicon Dioxide D.E. vs. Diatomite D.E.

There are many forms of diatomaceous earth out there, but not all are the same. Our D.E. is made of Amorphous Silicon Dioxide which is composed of crushed fossilized algae that comes from freshwater sources. This is the same type of D.E. that is used in food-grade diatomaceous earth and is mined from natural sources found throughout the world.

Synthetic Amorphous Silicon Dioxide, or Diatomite D.E., is another form of D.E. that’s commonly available. This kind of D.E. is manmade and doesn’t come from natural sources. It’s not a good idea to spread this type of D.E. inside your home or in areas where children, people or pets go.

Bedbug solution By bikemannc

4lbs will handle just about any 2 bedroom, 2 bath house. Getting a hand sprayer is a great and handy tool; allowing your to place or dust anywhere that's needed. If you cannot afford it use a small paint brush.

Hello Theo,

We apologize for this experience and would like to provide assistance.

Bedbugs, fleas, ants, or other insects that crawl through this product will die within 48 hours of contact. For fleas, thoroughly treat floor and bedding in and around pets’ sleeping quarters. Treat surrounding cracks and crevices, baseboards, carpeting, and wherever fleas are suspected. We recommend keeping the product down as long as the flea activity is seen to give them a chance to crawl through it.

Please give our Consumer Relations Team a call at 1-855-7-ORGANIC (1-855-767-4264) with additional questions.

Have fleas...Buy it!! By Byrd

Wow...It really works. Used for fleas in the yard and house. Applied and 3 days later it rained. I thought to myself that was a waste of time, but NO within a few days no more fleas jumping on my legs. I did not reapply after rain. I have hardwood floors. When treating in the house I spread on floor and waited 3 days before I cleaned DE off floor. Received item within a few days with regular shipping.

Safer brand diatomaceous earth really works. By Vicky

I got bed bugs over two years ago from a day care. I didn't even know they truly existed. Other than in the saying; sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite. When I first seen them, I thought they were a tick or other outside bug that had gotten in the house. After finding several, I looked on internet and realize we had bed bugs. I tried all kinds of over the counter sprays and bombs. I cleaned and sprayed for over a year but the bed bugs just got worse. I got rid of furniture, mattresses, carpets, toys, covers, pillows and clothes. I purchased mattress protectors for the new mattresses. I cleaned inside dresser drawers, closets, light switches, electrical sockets, picture frames, etc.... I deep cleaned regularly. I even emptied the food out of the deep freezer to placed items in there for months. But I still had bed bugs. I heard about diatomaceous earth so went to a local hardware store and purchased some. I put this brown dirt everywhere in the house. I let it stay down for over a week. It did seem to help so continued to use this dirt for the next few months. Unfortunately, I still had bed bugs. I purchased bug-away and bed bug bully. These did help but was expensive. And I still had bed bugs, not as many but still had them. A couple months ago I purchased Safer brand diatomaceous earth. I was glad that it was white dirt and not brown like the last kind I had bought. I put the Safer brand diatomaceous earth everywhere. I also continued using the bed bug bully to spray on things that I couldn't put the dirt on. I am very happy to say that I haven't seen a bed bug or had any bites in over a month! My daughter had a roach problem and after spreading the Safer brand diatomaceous earth for about a month, she no longer has roaches. It may be messy but it definitely works! I will continue to use Safer brand diatomaceous earth for a year just to make sure I never see a bed bug again!!!

Best option for the home! By Rita

I had a bad bout of fleas for a month. I am allergic and the bites have me looking as though Im being tortured. Additionally, I have a one year old baby and a cat. The safest option was a priority and this was a blessing. Within hours I noticed a huge difference. After one day, I had no more bites. And completely rid of them in 2 days altogether.

Works excellent. By Joe

Works excellent. Will kill just about all nasty parasites(mites, bedbugs, etc) as well as everyday pests. Whenever I, my fam, or pets have had a bug problem over the years, we just go to Home Depot across the street and buy a bag.

It worked! By Nelly

I all of a sudden had ants in my apartment throughout the bathroom and then they spread to the kitchen. I tried this stuff because it was more natural than other options. After 2 days I went from constantly seeing ants to seeing only 1 or 2 a day. I will do another dust of it. The bag is so big that I brought some over to my mom's house. I hope this helps her too!
